The Stain Protector Upsell: Offering Protection on Carpet and Upholstery the Easy Way
Stain protector is the add-on that sells itself to the right customer. The family with a new light-colored sofa. The homeowner who just paid to have the living room cleaned and doesn't want to see the same traffic lane next month. The customer with three kids and a dog. All you have to do is offer it, price it clearly and make sure it gets applied.
The Natural Add-On After Cleaning
Pet odor pricing was covered in Pricing Pet Odor Treatment Per Room or Per Area Without Undercharging. Stain protector is a different kind of add-on. Pet odor treatment solves a problem the customer already has. Protector is about the next spill.
In CarpetBossPro, Stain Protector is a checkbox on every job and estimate. When it's on the job, the stain protector step shows up on the tech's carpet cleaning checklist. When it isn't, the step stays off.
Pricing Protector on Carpet and Upholstery
Protector usually gets priced two ways, matching how you price the cleaning:
- Carpet: per room, or per square foot if you price carpet that way.
- Upholstery: per piece, such as sofa, loveseat and chair.
Set each up as its own service on the list: “Stain protector, per room,” “Stain protector, sofa,” “Stain protector, chair.” Then quotes are built by picking and setting quantities, and every invoice line says exactly what was protected.
Keep the descriptions honest. Protector can help with future spills, but it doesn't make anything stain-proof. Avoid promises about how long it lasts or what it will block.
Offering It Without the Hard Sell
The best moment to offer protector is on the estimate. A line under the carpet rooms or the sofa that says “Stain protector, optional” with a price lets the customer decide at home, without pressure. The customer approves the estimate online, choosing what they want.
The second best moment is the final walk-through, when the carpet and sofa look their best. A short line works: “If you want, we can put protector on the sofa while it's clean. It's on our price list as one more line.” Then let them answer. More on door conversations is in Selling Carpet Add-Ons at the Door Without Making the Customer Feel Sold.
Good customers to offer it to:
- Anyone with new or light-colored furniture
- Homes with kids or pets
- High-traffic rooms like the family room and hallway
- Offices and commercial spaces with heavy foot traffic
Getting It Applied Every Time
A sold protector that never gets applied is a refund waiting to happen. That's why the checklist step matters. If Stain Protector is on the job, the tech sees the step on the phone and checks it off when it's done. The office sees the completed checklist on the job.
Job notes should say what gets protected: “Protector on living room carpet and the sofa, not the loveseat.” Notes carry from the estimate to the job, and new jobs at a home fill in from the last job, so next year's cleaning starts with the same protector lines.
Protector also tends to be the last thing done on a job, which makes it the easiest step to drop when the day is running behind. Seeing it unchecked on the phone before tapping Complete is exactly the reminder a tech needs at five in the afternoon.
If the customer changes their mind on site, the tech notes it and the office removes the line before billing. The invoice should always match what was actually done.
Explaining It at the Final Walk-Through
The checklist ends with a final walk-through with dry time explained. When protector was applied, that's also the moment to explain, in general terms, how the customer should care for the protected areas. Keep it simple: blot spills quickly, don't scrub, call if something won't come up.
The note for the customer on the checklist is a good place to put that in writing. The customer sees the note and the before-and-after photos in the customer app.
Billing and Repeat Protector Sales
When the tech taps Complete, the invoice is created with each protector line separate from the cleaning, plus sales tax. The card on file can be charged. A customer reading “Stain protector, sofa” knows exactly what that charge is for.
Protector is a repeat sale. Customers who bought it once often buy it again at the next cleaning. Because the next job at a home fills in from the last one, it's already on the quote when the yearly cleaning comes due on the Waiting List. Tag protector customers so you can see who has bought it.
