Training a New Carpet Tech on the App in One Ride-Along
Training a new carpet tech takes time. Learning the equipment, the chemistry, the customer conversation and your company's standards does not happen in a day. The app should not add to that load. A new tech should be able to learn the tech app in a single ride-along, so the rest of their training can focus on the work itself.
Start With the Crew Setup
Running a lead and a helper together is covered in Helpers on the Van: Running a Two-Person Carpet Crew in the Tech App. A new tech often starts exactly that way, riding with an experienced lead.
Before the ride-along, the office adds the new employee in CarpetBossPro, gives them a personal PIN and assigns them to the van they will ride on. That is all the setup the app needs.
In the Shop: Ten Minutes Before the Van Rolls
Do the phone setup in the shop, not in the first customer's driveway:
- Open the tech app in the phone's browser.
- Sign in with the company login and the new tech's PIN.
- Install it to the home screen and put the icon on the first screen.
- Allow location for the browser so navigation and crew GPS work.
- Clock in on the time clock.
Then show them the day's list. Explain that the order comes from the office, that it can change during the day, and that they work it top to bottom. See A Carpet Cleaning App That Runs in the Phone's Browser: iPhone, Android and No App Store for the setup details.
The First Job: Watch the Lead
On the first job, the lead runs the phone and talks through each step out loud:
- In the van: “Here's the card. Three bedrooms, hallway, stairs. Plush carpet, hot water extraction. Pet odor in the back bedroom. Two cats, keep doors shut. Hose through the garage. Last time, the customer wanted shoes off.”
- At the door: “I tap Start, then we walk through with the customer.”
- During the job: “I check each step as I finish it. This pet odor step is only here because it was sold.”
- Photos: “Before photo of this stain now, after photo once it's groomed.”
- In the van after: “Rooms cleaned, dry time, stains, condition, a note for the customer. Then Complete.”
The new tech sees the whole loop once with someone who knows it.
The Second and Third Jobs: Hand Over the Phone
From the second job on, the new tech runs the phone on their own login while the lead watches. They read the card, tap navigation, tap Start, work the checklist, take the photos and fill in the records. The lead steps in only when something is about to go wrong, like tapping Complete before the final walk-through.
By the third or fourth job, most new techs are running the app without thinking about it. That frees the lead to focus on what actually takes time to learn: the cleaning, the customer and your company's standards.
Teach the Habits, Not Just the Buttons
The buttons are easy. The habits are what make the app useful. During the ride-along, cover:
- Read the card before you get out of the van. Every time.
- Read the past notes. They are the closest thing to having been there before.
- Check steps as you go, not all at the end.
- Talk about stains at the opening walk-through, not after cleaning.
- Write one useful sentence in the note for the customer and in the stain record.
- Tap Complete only after the final walk-through. It creates the invoice.
- Skip with a reason. Never a blank skip.
- Note on-site changes so the office can fix the invoice.
The End-of-Day Review
At the end of the day, take five minutes in the office to look at the new tech's completed jobs together. Open the finished checklists, the photos and the notes. Point out a great customer note. Point out a blurry photo. This is the moment the new tech learns that what they put in the app is actually read, which is the best reason to do it well.
After the ride-along, the new tech can start running simpler jobs on their own, with the job card and past notes giving them a head start at every house.
