The Walk-Through and the Final Walk-Through: Opening and Closing Every Carpet Job With the Customer
The two most important minutes of a carpet job are not spent with the wand. They are the first walk around the house with the customer and the last one. Most callbacks in carpet cleaning can be traced to one of those two moments being rushed or skipped. That is why the carpet cleaning checklist in CarpetBossPro opens with a walk-through and closes with a final walk-through.
Bookends on the Checklist
The full list of steps is in The Carpet Cleaning Checklist in the Tech App, Step by Step. This guide covers the first and last of them.
The first step is “Walk-through with the customer.” The last is “Final walk-through with dry time explained.” Everything else happens in between. Putting both on the checklist makes them part of the job, not a nice extra when there is time.
The Opening Walk-Through
The opening walk-through is where the tech and the customer agree on what is happening today. With the job card open, the tech walks each area and covers:
- The rooms. “I have three bedrooms, the hallway and the stairs today.” If the customer expected the living room too, now is the time to find out.
- The stains. The customer points out the spots they care about. The tech looks at each one and is honest about what usually comes out and what may not.
- The add-ons. “Pet odor treatment is in the back bedroom, right?” Confirms where it goes.
- The furniture. What the tech will move, what stays, and anything fragile.
- The pets and doors. Where the pets will be while the door is open for the hose.
This is the moment to take before photos, too. A photo of the stain by the closet taken during the walk-through is worth more than any explanation later.
Setting Expectations on Stains
The walk-through is the right time to talk about stains that may not come out. A tech who says, “This one looks old. I'll do my best and we'll see how far it lightens,” before cleaning sounds careful. The same words after cleaning sound like an excuse.
Whatever is said, the tech should write it down. If a stain does not come out, the checklist has a place to record it, covered in Stains That Did Not Come Out: Recording Them in the Carpet Tech App Before the Customer Calls.
Handling Changes at the Door
Sometimes the walk-through turns up a difference between the card and the house. The customer wants an extra room, or decides to skip the basement. The tech should not argue about it, and should not quietly do free work either. A simple approach:
- Tell the customer what is on today's ticket.
- If they want more, note it on the job so the office can add it as a line item at your price.
- If they want less, record the rooms actually cleaned on the checklist.
The office sees the note and the rooms cleaned on the finished job, so the invoice can match what was done.
The Final Walk-Through
The final walk-through closes the job. The tech walks the cleaned areas with the customer and covers:
- The work. What was cleaned, and how the traffic lanes and stains came out.
- Stains that did not come out. Shown honestly, with what was tried.
- Dry time. The tech explains the estimated dry time in general terms and what the customer should do in the meantime, such as keeping foot traffic light and leaving furniture on its blocks or tabs.
- Anything else. Wear, damage or areas that need attention, which goes into the condition.
Then the tech takes after photos and records the estimated dry time on the checklist. What the customer was told is now on the job, in case anyone asks later.
Why Both Matter for the Office
When a customer calls the next day, the office's first questions are what was agreed and what was said. The opening walk-through answers the first one. The final walk-through answers the second. With both on the checklist, and the rooms, dry time, stains, condition and note recorded, the office has the facts on the job.
The steps between the walk-throughs start with prep, covered next in Pre-Vacuum, Pre-Treat, Spot Treat: The Prep Steps on the Carpet Cleaning Checklist. For the full tech app, visit the CarpetBossPro carpet cleaning app page.
