Cross-Selling Upholstery to Your Carpet Customers Using Past Jobs and Tags

Your best upholstery leads aren't on a billboard. They're already in your client list. Every carpet customer has furniture, and most have a rug or a tile floor somewhere. They already trust your techs in their home. The question isn't whether they might want upholstery cleaning. It's whether anyone asks them.

Start With the Customers You Already Have

Bringing repeat customers back was covered in Repeat Upholstery Customers: Bringing Sofas and Rugs Back on a Schedule With the Waiting List. Cross-selling is the other half: taking a carpet-only customer and offering them the sofa, the rug or the tile.

CarpetBossPro keeps every job a customer has had, so you can see what each home bought. A home that has had three yearly carpet cleanings and never an upholstery cleaning is an obvious candidate for an offer.

Reading Past Jobs for Clues

Past jobs and notes tell you a lot:

Encourage your techs to write these observations in the job notes. A short “Customer asked about the dining chairs, not today” is a future sale waiting to be picked up. Past notes show on the tech's phone at the next visit too, so the tech can follow up in person.

Timing matters as much as the clue. A customer who mentioned the dining chairs in spring may be hosting a holiday dinner in the fall. A customer with a new puppy noted in the access notes will likely want help with the sofa a few months later. Reading past notes with the calendar in mind tells the office not just what to offer, but when the offer is most welcome.

Using Tags and Custom Fields

Tags and custom fields let you mark customers in ways that matter for cross-selling. Some useful tags:

When you have a slow week coming, a list of carpet customers tagged “Pet home” who haven't had upholstery done is a ready-made call list. Custom fields can hold details like how many pieces of furniture are in the living room, which makes quoting the cross-sell faster. Tracking with tags is covered in Tracking Upholstery, Rug and Tile Work With Reports, Tags and Custom Fields.

Offering It on the Next Quote

The simplest cross-sell is a line on the next estimate. When a carpet customer comes due on the Waiting List and the office builds their quote, add an optional upholstery line: “Sofa cleaning, optional.” The customer sees it next to their usual rooms and decides.

Estimate templates make this a habit. A “Yearly carpet, with upholstery offer” template that includes an optional sofa line means every repeat quote mentions upholstery, whoever builds it. The customer approves online, and if they approve the sofa, it becomes part of the scheduled job, with the Upholstery box checked and the step on the tech's checklist.

Cross-Selling on Site

Techs are in the best position to cross-sell, because they can see the furniture. The opening walk-through on the checklist is a natural moment: “We do sofas too. If you ever want yours done, we can quote it.” No pressure, just information.

If the customer wants it today, the tech says the price from the service list and notes the request or texts the office, and the office adds the line item. If the customer wants it next time, the tech writes it in the job notes and the office tags the customer. Either way, the interest is captured.

Before-and-after photos help here. A tech who can show a photo of a sofa from a past job (with the owner's permission) often makes the sale for you.

Going the Other Way

Cross-selling works both ways. Customers who first called for upholstery, a rug or tile are carpet leads. A customer who booked a sofa-only job might have carpet upstairs. Offer it on their next quote, and tag them so the office knows.

Customers can also request service and sign up for plans in the customer app, so an interested customer can act without waiting for a call. Customers can rate and refer from the app too, which turns a happy cross-sell into a new lead.
